Campfire Trick #6

“What was your favorite part of the campout?” I asked my camping buddy on the drive back home. We had spent several days camped beside a beautiful river, hiked in the Alpine Lake Wilderness, dipped in gorgeous lakes, and breathed in a landscape straight out of a movie.

“The popcorn in a can,” she said fast without thinking.

This is an amazing trick that will impress your friends and family! You only need a few ingredients, and a campfire—a beautiful way to end a day of hiking.

What you will need:

  • Empty soda or beer can

  • Stick to poke through the tab to hold over the fire

  • 1 Tablespoon oil

  • 2 tablespoons popcorn

  • salt

  • Sharp knife or leatherman multi-tool to cut open the can

When campfires are allowed, build a fire. Pop open a can of beer or soda and drink it down. Shake out the last drops. Carefully add the oil , salt. and the popcorn inside the now empty can and shake it all together. Poke the stick through the tab and hold it over the fire. Depending on the heat of the fire the corn should begin popping within minutes. When the popping slows, it’s ready. Let the can cool and cut open with the knife. Enjoy!
