Great Hikes for Kids: Snoqualmie Corridor (Yamakiasham), Washington

Gold Creek Pond Loop

  • Pass needed at the trailhead: Northwest Forest Pass (Sno-Park Pass needed in winter)

  • Easy

  • 1 mile

  • Elevation gain: 10 feet

  • 45 minutes

This gentle paved hike is accessible to all—by stroller, wheelchair, or two tiny feet. Listen to the birds, watch the wildlife, it’s amazing to think that in the 1970’s and early 80’s this was a gravel pit used to build the I-90 freeway; today it’s a wonderful example of government agencies working together to restore and reclaim the landscape. It’s more lake than pond with plenty of access points to splash about, and picnic tables and grills to settle in at. Gold Creek is also a wonderful place for a family snowshoe.

Franklin Falls

  • Pass needed at the trailhead: Northwest Forest Pass

  • Easy

  • 2 miles round trip out and back

  • Elevation gain: 400 feet

  • 1-1.5 hours

Franklin Falls is a perfect family hike even for the three-year-olds among us (go at their pace!) with the stunning climax of a thundering three tiered waterfall. You’ll only be able to see the third tier, a 109’ sheer plunge into a pool, but it is impressive indeed, particularly during the peak of snowmelt during June and July. During those months prepare for mist-kisses and watch your footing on the rocks. A wonderful hike year round, in winter the falls often ice up spectacularly and the trail is an easy snowshoe in. https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/franklin-falls

Coal Mine Trails

  • No pass needed

  • Easy

  • 9.5 miles round trip out and back

  • Elevation gain: 450 feet

  • 5 hours

Another lovely stroll through history, this time through the rich coal mining history of the region with interpretive signs along the way. The wide and mellow trail from Cle Elum to Ronald was a railroad line until it was converted to a public recreation trail in 1994. Popular with bikers as well as hikers, in winter it’s used by snowshoers, cross country skiers, and snowmobilers. Along the way stop in at charming Roslyn for lunch at the Roslyn Café used as a set for the quirky TV series Northern Exposure. https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/coal-mines-trail-cle-elum
