Great Hikes for Kids: Alpine Lakes Wilderness (Yamakiasham), Washington

Icicle Gorge Interpretive Nature Loop

  • Pass needed at the trailhead: Northwest Forest Pass

  • Easy

  • 4 miles

  • Elevation gain: 150 feet

  • 1.5-2 hours

I can’t think of a better way to end hours spent in a car than hiking this gentle interpretive trail. The Icicle River through the gorge, however, is anything but gentle. It seethes and swerves and hurtles down the narrow granite walls filling the air with thunder while you watch from a broad trail beside it. Ideal for families, beginner hikers, trail runners, bird watchers and anyone who enjoys learning more about this stunning corner of the Pacific Northwest. https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/icicle-gorge-loop

Upper Icicle Creek

  • Pass needed at the trailhead: Northwest Forest Pass

  • Easy

  • 3 miles round trip out and back

  • Elevation gain: 400 feet

  • 2 hours

An inviting hike to walk and talk with companions—it’s level, green with trees and a lush undergrowth, and a refreshing change from the more crowded hikes further down Icicle Creek. At the confluence of Icicle and French Creek there are campsites that are perfect for families and first timers to backpacking, and at night the soothing song of moving water is your background score. Base here and the next day explore further up the trail. Bring bug spray and mosquitos nets to fit over your hat in the summer. https://www.wta.org/go-hiking/hikes/upper-icicle-creek
