Hiking Rules of the Trail:

  • There’s a hierarchy on the trail: horses have priority, then hikers, then mountain bikers who must yield to both horses and hikers. When you are passed by a horse, stand on the downhill side when possible; horses tend to bolt uphill when spooked

  • Give way to the uphill hiker

  • Stay on the trail! Erosion is easy to start and hard to stop

  • Keep to the right and pass on the left. When approaching another hiker from behind call out a friendly hello, or ‘On your left’

  • When taking a break, move off the trail so others can pass easily

  • Leave no trace! If you packed it in, pack it out, including banana peels, used gum, and toilet paper

  • If hiking in a group, don’t crowd out the trail - leave enough space for those behind you to pass

  • Don’t feed the wildlife!  It interferes with their natural foraging habits and makes them pests

  • Limit device use on the trail. There’s plenty of time for that at home
